Dedications for Virginia Tech University

Category: Let's talk

So I know this will piss people off, it will make a lot of people think that I'm an insensative basterd. The truth is, I don't care. My sense of humor is indeed warpped, but it is still my sense of humor, you don't have to agree with it. I'm thinking of songs that we could dedicate to students at virginia tech, you know, songs like "Janie's got a gun" by Aerosmith, and others. Let's hear your best tunes with getting shot in either the title, or the chorus. Remember folks, if you can't laugh about life, it's not worth living.

"throw those guns away" kids of dumblane "my baby shot me down" audio bullies "another one bites the dust, and killer queen" both by queen, "poison" by alice cooper, and um, when i think of more, i'll get back to this topic

oh my gosh freak show. you have stooped to an all time low. since of humor is one thing. this is just um, keep an eye on this one. we've found our next shooters!

Post 4 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Wednesday, 02-May-2007 6:03:35

That is very insensitive. To poster 1, you've found the first person who's pissed off by this topic, and I have a feeling I'm not going to be the last!

Post 5 by Shadow_Cat (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Wednesday, 02-May-2007 6:45:56

Wow. I would ordinarily ghet pissed off by this, but AB8WO, you're not even worth the energy it takes me to get angry. While I don't agree with Shea, and think we've found our next shooter, I definitely think we've found someone with a gigantic stone where their heart was supposed to be.

Ouch, but true.

At the risk of having my testicles chopped off by my wife, I'm actually going to jump in here in Chris's defense up to a point.

I can certainly understand why people reading this would feel anger as an initial response, that's only natural, however I think it should be pointed out that for some people, finding a way of laughing about things is actually a coping mechanism. I mean really when you think about it, this World we've created is full of horrible, unbelievable, unspeakable things going on, every single day. Now what would you have people do, sit around and forever mope and morn, or do whatever they can to put such events into perspective and move on.

Take the example of Londoners during the second World war when night after night drove and drove of German bomber squadrons flew over the city and systematically destroyed the place, killing literally ten's of thousands of people. Did Londoners sit around all day long moaning and complaining, well, I'm sure that some did of course, but in the main people made light of their situation. It wasn't that they didn't care, they weren't heartless unfeeling monsters, it was just a way of trivializing the events that were going on at the time so that it became easier to cope.

So while you all may well find this topic abhorrent, at least try and cut the initial poster that much slack.

Dan.

um, yeah, i majorly disagree with you. don't make excuses for him making this post. it's highly insinsitive. think of how the people that were in or near this school, or know of someone that was involved. how do you think they feel seeing this made a joke of? Put yourself in there shoes. I recall a little while back someone making a post about the deceast and dan, you told them to put themselves in the friends shoes and how insinsitive it as of them to post negative things about them. although you may claim this poster is joking, it's still going to hurt for them to see it made a laughing matter of! lame excuse if you ask me! my opinion and we all know opinions are like assholes and obviously i married one. hehehehe smiles. kidden!

I don't think that just because some of us disagree with this post, that it means we sit around and mope about the Virginia Tech situation. We simply feel compassion, where obviously some others don't. We try to help where we can, not make fun of others' pain. So, don't accuse those of us with hearts of sitting around and moping. The folks in London during World War II certainly did not sit and mope, they eventually came back, joined by America, to kick ass and take names from Germany. While that might not be an option here, we can at least extend sympathy, rather than unfeeling laughter.

Ok, and I can counter that arguement, by saying that just because some of us joke about the worst situations in life doesn't mean we don't also have compassion.
Personally I feel that there is nothing that should not bejoked about if the joke itself is funny. That in itself is of course subjective as what is humorous to one, will not be to another. However, do we prevent ourselves from ever making a joke, as to do so shows a lack of compassion for whomever the joke may be aimed at?
Does a joke about the blind show lack of compassion to the blind? of course not, and while you'll say that blindness is no comparison to the shooting at Vaginia tech you'd be right, but it's still the same thing, you are making fun of something that some will mope about, some may feel suicidal about, so do we forego the telling of any joke simply because of this? of course not.
So, if it will offend, avoid it, display your displeasure, and move on.

Post 15 by Dusty (This site is so "educational") on Thursday, 03-May-2007 17:19:33

Well this is a tricky one, but Blackbird has stolen some of my thunder. Compassion and humour in this kind of situation are not mutually exclusive, and just because I laugh at or make a joke about something, that doesn't mean I can't put my heart and soul into doing what I can to help or support those affected. What is it that is insensitive, is it the timing, the subject matter or the fact that it is a tradegy? EVERY joke has a fall-guy or tragedy of some sort, that's the point of it, and while I might find a joke about a shooting funny today, don't even think about telling me it at the weekend if somebody close to me gets shot tomorrow.

The point is that a good joke will always be a good joke, it's the situation and/or the audience that makes it appropriate or not. I will laugh at a Black joke, a blind joke, a single-parent family joke if it is funny. Of course it will be also be offensive.

If I could stop the events by not telling the joke, that might change the situation; other than that, no subject is off-limits. So far the attempts in this thread haven't been funny, having said that, I don't find them offensive either. "I may disagree with your opinion, but I'll defend to the death your right to express it".

I second what Dan, Kevin, and Dusty have all said, and won't try to add anything further since they've collectively done such a good job of summing up my thoughts better than I'd've done.

That said, "Hit Me with Your Best Shot" was my first thought, and apart from that, I got nothin' as of now. I'll have to think about it.
